Statement of Communication
Big stories deserve a big stage. Last year, the Greensboro Six finally got theirs.
Each August, the Wyndham Championship draws PGA TOUR players from around the world for a week of elite competition. But for title sponsor Wyndham Rewards, the tournament is about more than scores and leaderboards—it’s about creating lasting community impact that resonates year-round.
In 2024, that mission shone through by bringing too often untold story to light: the story of the Greensboro Six, six Black men who, in 1955, defied segregation laws by playing at the whites-only Gillespie Golf Course. Their courage quickly led to their arrest, and in turn ignited landmark civil rights actions that, over the course of many years, would help pave the way for the desegregation of professional golf—culminating in 1961 with Charlie Sifford becoming the first black golfer to play in a PGA Tour event in the south. That event? It was The Greater Greensboro Open, known today as the Wyndham Championship.
Today, Gillespie Golf Course is home to First Tee–Central Carolina, a youth development program that teaches life skills and leadership through golf and a long-time philanthropic partner of the Wyndham Championship. Despite a nearly two-decade long relationship between the two organizations—the story of the Greensboro Six had not previously been shared—until one day during a routine meeting between the organization and Wyndham leadership.
In that moment, the goal became clear—How do we leverage the Wyndham Championship as a platform to elevate The Greensboro Six and give their story the spotlight it deserves—not just during the week of Wyndham Championship, but throughout the years to come.
